Morigaon: An unauthorized buffalo fight scheduled to take place on Sunday at Chikabori, in central Assam's Morigaon district, was successfully prevented following an appeal from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India to the district administration and superintendent of police.

This action comes after the Gauhati High Court issued an order on February 6, directing the strict enforcement of a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) prohibiting buffalo fights after January 25, 2024. PETA India cited this order in their appeal, emphasizing the illegality of the planned event.

The intervention comes amidst a broader effort by PETA India to combat animal cruelty in Assam. Two recent FIRs were filed by police based on PETA India complaints, documenting instances of severe abuse during unauthorized buffalo fights in Raha Koroiguri and Kasomari.

"PETA India commends the district commissioner and superintendent of police of Morigaon for their prompt action in preventing this cruel spectacle," said Tushar Kol, Advocacy Associate for PETA India.

"We urge the public to report any illegal fights they witness and hope for a complete ban on these practices," he said.

PETA India has also filed writ petitions with the Gauhati High Court, arguing for a permanent ban on both buffalo and bulbul bird fights, citing numerous legal and ethical violations.

Investigations by PETA India revealed disturbing instances of animal cruelty in both practices, including beatings, drugging, and forced fighting.

PETA India emphasizes that these events not only violate Indian laws but also contradict the principles of ahimsa (non-violence) and compassion deeply rooted in Indian culture.

The organization is hopeful that their efforts will contribute to a more humane future for animals in Assam.
