Guwahati: A bridge over the Rukni River in Cachar, Assam collapsed on Friday evening leaving one person missing.

The incident occurred at Bhaga Bazar when a bridge over the Rukni River collapsed as two stone-laden trucks attempted to cross it.

The bridge, which was reportedly due for repairs, gave way under the weight of the vehicles.

The driver of one of the trucks is suspected to have fallen into the river while trying to escape and is currently reported missing.

Rescue teams have been deployed to the scene to ensure no further damage takes place and to conduct a thorough search for the missing driver.

The collapse has disrupted connectivity in the area.

An investigation into the incident is likely to follow, sources said stating of possible negligences.
