Guwahati: Bodoland University in Assam aiming to empower farmers who have never been to school has introduced a unique course.

The course is specifically designed to address the needs of these non-literate farmers, equipping them with essential agricultural knowledge and skills.

Recognizing the challenges faced by rural communities, the program bridges the educational gap by offering practical, hands-on training. Participants will learn vital techniques in agriculture, crop management, soil health, and even modern farming technologies.

Financial literacy and market linkage strategies are also included, providing a comprehensive skillset to improve their livelihoods and economic well-being.

Anupam Baruah, the Vice-Chancellor of Bodoland University, emphasized the importance of this initiative in promoting inclusive education and empowering marginalized groups.

"Our aim," he stated, "is to empower every farmer, regardless of their educational background, with the knowledge and tools they need to succeed in today's agricultural landscape."

The certificate program would focus on skills including pearl cultivation, vermicomposting (composting with worms), creating gobar gas (biogas from cow dung), making plates from areca nut, bio-floc fish farming, cultivating mushrooms (both basic and advanced techniques), producing value-added food products, plant tissue culture, and beekeeping.

The program has 30 spots available for the first group of participating farmers.
