Assam BJP confident of significant Muslim support in Lok Sabha elections

GUWAHATI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam seems to be confident of garnering significant backing from the Muslim community in the state in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has predicted that a substantial portion of votes from the Muslim community in the state will go in favour of the BJP.

“You will observe that a considerable number of Muslim voters in Assam will choose to support the BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections,” said CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Echoing similar views, Assam BJP president Bhabesh Kalita asserted that Muslims in the Northeast state are poised to vote for the BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha election.

Kalita emphasized that the Muslim community in Assam has grown disillusioned with the Congress, perceiving its promises as hollow and its approach as derisive toward minorities.

“Muslims now comprehend the Congress’s tactics and are unlikely to lend their support to them in the Lok Sabha election,” the Assam BJP chief remarked.

He added: “Assam has witnessed substantial progress across various sectors in recent years, drawing the attention of Muslims who are now inclined to vote for the BJP.”

Kalita further projected that the BJP and its allies are poised to secure victory in at least 13 out of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam.

It is noteworthy that the BJP has nominated candidates in 11 Lok Sabha constituencies in Assam, allocating two seats to its ally, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and one to the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) in the Bodoland region.

The AGP is contesting in the Barpeta and Dhubri Lok Sabha seats, while the UPPL has fielded a candidate in Kokrajhar.
