Dibrugarh: The Assam Tea Tribes Students Association (ATTSA) on Friday burned an effigy of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at the Mancotta Tea Estate in Dibrugarh.

This protest was in response to alleged police brutality against workers at the Hatikhuli Tea Estate on July 31.

The agitated workers raised slogans against the Assam government and burned the effigy of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

"We condemn the police brutality against the workers of Hatikhuli Tea Estate. They were subjected to a lathi charge by the police on July 31 while protesting against the sale of garden land for the construction of a five-star luxury hotel. This land belongs to the workers, and now it has been handed over to big hotel owners for hotel construction," said Lakhindar Kurmi, secretary of ATTSA, Dibrugarh.

"We warn Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the BJP government not to encroach on tea garden land. If they continue to disregard the lives of the tea garden people, we will intensify our movement against the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led BJP government," Kurmi added.
