Guwahati: Assam chief secretary Ravi Kota highlighted the potential of agarwood to become the state's next major economic driver, comparable to tea and oil, if developed systematically.

Speaking at the inauguration of MJI Perfumes in Guwahati, the first licensed agarwood perfume and retail store in Assam, Kota highlighted the state's ideal climate for agarwood cultivation and its high demand in global markets, particularly the Middle East.

Kota mentioned the Assam Agarwood Promotion Policy 2020, which aims to support and organize the mostly small-scale agarwood processing units.

He also announced the upcoming Agar International Trade Centre in Golaghat district of Assam, which will enhance commercialization efforts and encourage local entrepreneurship.

He expressed hope that agarwood products will become popular souvenirs for tourists, alongside traditional items like gamocha and japi.
