Guwahati: A huge consignment of endangered fish was recovered from the Guwahati Railway Station in Kamrup Metro, Assam on Tuesday evening.

According to sources, the fish identified to be the endangered species, Channa Barca were rescued based on specific inputs. Government Railway Police and Assam Forest officials recovered 62 rare and endangered Channa Barca fish from Guwahati Railway Station.

The fish, valued for their striking appearance and ecological significance, were found in two sealed cartons containing 31 plastic packets.

Channa barca, also known as the Barca snakehead, is a rare and endangered species of freshwater fish native to India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar.

However, most wildlife traffickers tend to poach the fish from the Kaziranga National Park area.

Channa barca plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance of its ecosystem as a top predator.

Its presence also indicates the health and quality of its habitat.

IUCN Red List: Listed as Endangered due to habitat loss, overfishing, and introduction of invasive species and it is scheduled under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
