GUWAHATI: The Congress-led 16-party United Opposition Forum (UOF) in Assam has vowed to reignite protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) if the Central government proceeds with its implementation.

This decision was reached during a meeting held by the United Opposition Forum in Assam.

A delegation from the opposition parties will meet with Assam governor Gulan Chand Kataria to deliver a memorandum to President Droupadi Murmu opposing the implementation of the CAA.

Despite the CAA being put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, union home minister Amit Shah recently indicated plans for its implementation once the rules are formulated.

Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah stated readiness to protest at Janata Bhawan if necessary, accusing the BJP of using the CAA for political polarization before the upcoming elections.

Additionally, Borah announced plans for an Assam bandh the day following the CAA's enforcement.

The UOF general secretary and Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi reiterated opposition to the CAA, declaring it unconstitutional and harmful to the indigenous people of Assam.

Gogoi announced plans for continuous protests against the law, including a siege of Janata Bhawan.

The UOF welcomed two new parties, Purbanchaliya Lok Parishad (PLP) and Samajwadi Party (SP), increasing its strength to 16 parties.

Discussions on seat sharing for the upcoming elections are ongoing, with various party leaders, including Assam TMC president Ripun Borah and UOF chief spokesperson Akhil Gogoi, participating in the meeting.
