Arunachal Pradesh added to China’s ‘core interests’, Pentagon report says
Guwahati: China has identified Arunachal Pradesh as part of its 'core interests,' which it considers non-negotiable, according to a Pentagon report submitted to the US Congress.
The report highlights that China has expanded its core interests to include Taiwan, maritime disputes in the South China Sea, the Senkaku Islands, and Arunachal Pradesh.
According to the document, Beijing views the unification of China with these disputed territories as essential for the "great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation" by 2049.
A rejuvenated China is expected to operate at a higher global level, maintain a "world-class" military capable of winning wars, and firmly safeguard its sovereignty, security, and developmental objectives.
The report explains that China’s three central, non-negotiable core interests are the authority of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), economic development, and the defence and expansion of its territorial claims.
The CCP is described as highly sensitive to perceived threats, whether domestic or foreign, including criticism over its handling of Chinese interests.
Regarding India-China relations, the report highlights developments along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). In October 2024, India and China agreed to disengage from remaining standoff points shortly before a meeting between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the BRICS Summit.
This meeting initiated monthly high-level talks addressing border management, direct flights, visa facilitation, and exchanges of academics and journalists.
While China seeks to reduce tensions along the LAC to stabilise relations and prevent closer US-India ties, the report notes that India is likely to remain cautious of China’s intentions.
Mutual distrust and other longstanding irritants are expected to continue limiting the bilateral relationship.
