Arunachal Pradesh | Aalo Bird Walk: Exploring avian diversity with ‘Feathers & Footsteps’
GUWAHATI: The West Siang district administration of Arunachal Pradesh, in collaboration with the Siang team of Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE-Siang), along with the forest and tourism department, is set to host the inaugural edition of the Aalo Bird Walk titled "Feathers and Footsteps" on March 2 and 3.
This exciting event features a variety of engaging activities, including educational talks on bird identification, the importance of bird conservation, and a fun quiz.
Participants will also have the opportunity to embark on exploratory walks in selected areas near Aalo to document the diverse avian species, led by experienced birders and conservation scientists from ATREE.
The pre-walk orientation, educational talks, quiz, and valedictory function will take place at the Conference Hall at the DC’s office in Aalo.
Expressing enthusiasm for the event, Mamu Hage, the deputy commissioner of West Siang in Arunachal Pradesh and an avid birder herself, stated, “We are thrilled to partner with ATREE-Siang to organize the first-ever Aalo bird walk, providing residents and nature enthusiasts with a unique opportunity to connect with Aalo's avian diversity. Such activities will not only inspire our youth and support conservation efforts but also foster a passion for bird watching and research.”
Dr Rajkamal Goswami, who leads the ATREE-Siang team based in Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh, emphasized the accessibility of bird watching, stating, “Given the widespread presence of birds, they offer an excellent entry point for individuals interested in observing and documenting biodiversity. One does not need elaborate equipment or specialized skills to begin bird watching—just a deep love for nature, keen observation skills, and a sense of wonder.”

Both ATREE and the district administration of West Siang in Arunachal Pradesh are committed to environmental stewardship and have pledged to ensure that the event is plastic and waste-free.
Participants are encouraged to bring non-disposable water bottles, suitable walking shoes, binoculars, and cameras (if available), and to avoid carrying disposable waste-generating items such as chips and biscuit packets.
