Guwahati: Supporters of the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) held a press briefing near the Deputy Commissioner’s Office on November 29, raising allegations of coercive campaign practices by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the Tawang District Panchayat Elections.

The PPA claimed that two of its uncontested candidates were pressured to withdraw their nominations on the final day of filing, raising questions about the fairness of the electoral process in the district.

According to the party, BJP workers and leaders, including those close to Chief Minister Pema Khandu, attempted to influence the PPA candidates to step down.

The PPA described these actions as “undemocratic and unlawful,” saying such interference undermines the principles of a free election.

The party’s supporters said the incident reflects a broader concern that smaller parties may face undue pressure in the run-up to the Panchayat elections.

They urged that all candidates be allowed to compete without intimidation or coercion.

The PPA also called on the district administration and the Election Commission to take immediate steps to protect the democratic process and ensure adherence to the election code of conduct.

The press briefing concluded with a demand for transparency, neutrality, and fairness, as the district prepares for a closely watched Panchayat election.
