Arunachal govt orders firearm deposit ahead of 2025 local elections
Digboi: The Deputy Commissioner of Changlang, Vishal Sah (IAS), has issued an order mandating the immediate deposit of all licensed firearms across the district in Arunachal Pradesh.
The directive comes in line with instructions issued by the State Election Commission, Arunachal Pradesh, which, through its letter No. AP/SEC-662/2024/8873-75 dated November 3, 2025, has sought uniform statewide measures to prevent the misuse of weapons during the election period.
Acting upon this mandate, the district administration has moved swiftly to enforce strict compliance across Changlang.
As per the order, all firearm licence holders must surrender their weapons at the nearest police station, without fail, on or before the date of filing nomination papers.
Authorities have directed the officer-in-charge of each police station to receive deposited firearms with proper acknowledgment and maintain meticulous records until their release.
Officials will return the weapons only a week after the election results are declared, following document verification and submission of the original receipt.
Sending a strong message against any form of intimidation or electoral misconduct, the District Magistrate has also imposed a blanket ban on the public carrying of sharp and lethal weapons, including locally fabricated “Khaza Banduks,” with effect from the commencement of the nomination process.
The order emphasizes that the measure is vital to preserve public order and uphold the integrity of the democratic process, warning that authorities will not tolerate any compromise on law and order during the election period.
The order strictly limits exemptions to personnel of the police, defence forces, Central Armed Police Forces, and other authorised security agencies performing official duties.
Institutional licence holders such as banks, financial organisations, and licensed security agencies seeking relaxation must apply to the District Magistrate with valid justification and necessary supporting documents for consideration.
The Superintendent of Police, Changlang, will strictly enforce the order by rigorously monitoring compliance and submitting weekly status reports to the Deputy Commissioner until all licensed firearms are deposited and verified.
The district administration has cautioned that any defiance, concealment, or non-compliance with the order will invite action under the Arms Act, 1959. Violators may face suspension or cancellation of their arms licence in addition to prosecution under relevant legal provisions.
The order, issued in the interest of maintaining peace and stability during the election cycle, shall remain in force until the conclusion of the entire electoral process in Changlang district.
