Guwahati: The upcoming 27th General Conference-cum-Election of the All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union (AAPSU), scheduled from February 17 to 23, 2026, has triggered debate across Arunachal Pradesh.

People have raised concerns over venue refusals, alleged violence, and the timing of the event during ongoing board examinations.

Dera Natung Government College has declined to host the conference-cum-election on its campus, citing the peak academic session. Observers say past incidents of unrest and damage during similar events influenced the decision. Local residents have also objected to hosting the event at Siddhartha Hall in the Thupten Gyatsaling Monastery premises, citing fears of disturbance to peace and normal life.

The election schedule has added to the unease. The Arunachal Pradesh State Board has already begun examinations for Classes III and XI. Authorities have scheduled exams for Classes V and VIII on February 18 and 19. The CBSE will start its examinations from February 15. Parents and educators have questioned the decision to hold a politically charged event while students prepare for crucial exams.

Social media users have circulated reports of heavy spending in the election process and alleged political backing of candidates. Although unverified, these claims have increased scrutiny over the growing role of money in student politics.

Reports say people heard gunfire near the AAPSU office during the registration process. Police have launched an investigation. The incident has raised fears about the use of intimidation in what should remain a democratic student exercise.

Sources have also claimed that underground groups have tried to influence certain student unions in eastern Arunachal. If confirmed, such involvement would point to serious external interference in student leadership.

AAPSU once stood as a powerful voice for students in the state. Today, it faces a critical test. As the election approaches, many are urging authorities and stakeholders to ensure a peaceful, transparent, and violence-free process so that student politics serves education and youth welfare, not disruption.
