Guwahati: Ten people have been arrested in connection with a suspected case of mob lynching in Muvattupuzha, Kerala, where a migrant worker from Arunachal Pradesh was allegedly fatally beaten two days ago.

The deceased, identified as Asok Das, a 24-year-old migrant from Arunachal Pradesh, had travelled to the southern state in search of employment and had been residing in rented accommodation in Valakam, Muvattupuzha.

Das was allegedly accosted and interrogated by a group of locals while visiting a female friend in the same area on Thursday evening. He was subsequently tied to a pole and subjected to torture.

Das was later taken to a nearby hospital and later transferred to Kolencherry Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Friday while receiving treatment.

Police said that Das had suffered severe injuries as a result of the assault.

Ten people have been taken into custody in connection with the incident. Initially, a case was registered under Section 174 of the Indian Penal Code for non-compliance with an order from a public servant.

However, following a preliminary investigation, the charge was upgraded to include Section 302, which pertains to murder.

Police said that they are working to determine the circumstances that led to the attack. Notably, the woman whom Asok Das had visited has not filed a complaint against him, reports The Indian Express.
