Guwahati: Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein has said that hydropower projects with a total installed capacity of 12,500 megawatts will become operational in the state in the next two years.

These projects have been undertaken by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO), Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited (THDC) and Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN).

These hydropower projects, once operational, will significantly boost the state’s economy.

While five of these projects will be operational in 2025, three each will start functioning between 2026 and 2027.

These hydro projects will not only meet the power requirements of Arunachal Pradesh but also contribute to the country’s energy needs fostering rapid economic development in the state.

Being multipurpose projects, the large dams would offer multiple benefits, including regulating water flow downstream, and supporting irrigation and fisheries.

Besides generating power, the hydropower projects will also give a boost to tourism thus creating employment opportunities in Arunachal Pradesh.

Moreover, the hill state would earn Rs 1,836 crore annually from equity shares in these projects which would benefit the future generations.

Additionally, small hydro projects would also be developed in the frontier state’s remote border villages.

These projects will help in providing power to the isolated communities and also be beneficial for the defence personnel stationed in the bordering areas.
