Arunachal Pradesh sees expansion of helipads amid strategic imperatives

ITANAGAR: The Centre prioritizes enhancing air connectivity in Arunachal Pradesh, with the construction of nine helipads completed and six more underway.

Given Arunachal Pradesh's strategic location along the border with China, air connectivity is of paramount importance.

These helipads will facilitate swift movement in border areas, crucial for security.

Between 2020 and 2023, nine helipads were constructed, with six more currently being built in the Army’s 3 Corps area.

This development aims to establish an “air bridge”, enabling efficient troop deployment, weapons transport, and logistics delivery, especially in areas with poor road connectivity.

Seven valleys in Arunachal Pradesh have been linked with Chinook-specific helipads, ensuring rapid aerial connectivity for quick sorties to forward areas, as highlighted by army sources.

The Indian Army presently operates Cheetah, Chetak, and Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) in Arunachal Pradesh.

The Chinook helicopters, known for their versatility, can transport up to 45 troops and carry a load capacity of 10 tonnes underslung, including heavy artillery like the Indian Field Gun (IFG) and M777 Howitzers.

Given the ongoing standoff with China along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), enhancing air infrastructure is crucial to counter any potential threats effectively.
