Guwahati: The National People's Party (NPP) has denied that the Rs 1 crore which was found from a car trailing Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma's convoy was not theirs.

A sum of Rs 1 crore in cash was confiscated from a vehicle tailing the convoy of Meghalaya CM and NPP national president, Conrad Sangma in Longding district of Arunachal Pradesh on Thursday.

It may be mentioned that Arunachal Pradesh is gearing up for simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly elections scheduled for April 19.

The car, a Toyota Fortuner bearing registration number AS01ET5252, was registered to a company named MS Badri Rai Company.

However, the NPP claimed that it had no connection with the car or the money intercepted that day.

NPP Spokesperson Himalaya M Shangpliang claimed that they or the convoy had no clue about the incident and only came to know about it through the media.

He claimed that "attempts" to link NPP or Conrad Sangma to the seized money were baseless and had no merit.

He further said that the car was not part of their convoy and all vehicles in the CM's convoy had to go through strict security measures according to the standard protocols.

The cash was seized at the Kanubari checkpost in Longding from the car and it belonged to Harshvardhan Singh, the executive director of said company.

It may further be mentioned that the cash was initially said to have been transported to pay construction workers but an investigation has been initiated.

The IT department has also initiated the probe.

It may be mentioned that with the elections being overhead and the model code of conduct being in place, there is a prohibition in transporting cash exceeding Rs 50 thousand.

It may also be mentioned that the NPP would not contest any seat in Arunachal in view of its support for the NDA.
