Guwahati: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu applauded the Border Roads Organization (BRO) for their heroic rescue of 70 stranded tourists at Sela Pass in Tawang.

“I commend the extraordinary efforts of the @BROindia personnel who valiantly rescued 70 stranded tourists at Sela Pass in Tawang,” Chief Minister Khandu wrote on [platform where he posted the message]. "They braved a fierce blizzard and howling winds, demonstrating immense courage and dedication. Commendable work! Congratulations!"

On Friday, BRO personnel rescued 70 tourists and locals who were stranded at Sela Pass due to heavy snowfall.

"Heavy snowfall in Tawang District since February 22nd, 2024, disrupted traffic and closed roads. Demonstrating exceptional commitment, the BRO went beyond their usual duties to conduct a rescue operation, evacuating approximately 70 people stranded at Sela Pass," a BRO press release stated.

The incident occurred when vehicles became stranded at the Pass on the night of February 22nd/23rd. "42 BRTF of Project Vartak mobilized its personnel and equipment to rescue them," the press release continued.

"The team braved the chilling cold, with temperatures dropping below -10 degrees Celsius, to save lives throughout the night. They successfully moved everyone to safety by 4:30 am on February 23rd," the release added.

"Project Vartak has deployed personnel around the clock, not only at Sela Pass but also on other crucial roads in the region, to ensure continuous accessibility for traffic," the release concluded.
