Guwahati: Union home minister Amit Shah engaged in a comprehensive discussion with Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday (July 15) to evaluate the ongoing flood situation in the state.

Amit Shah assessed the impact of the heavy rainfall and the subsequent surge in water levels, which have caused widespread devastation.

In their conversation, Amit Shah assured Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma of central assistance and the support of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to manage and mitigate the flood crisis.

The flood situation in Assam remains dire, with the death toll rising to over 90, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

More than 5 lakh people across 18 districts in Assam are affected, with Cachar being the most severely impacted district.

The affected districts include Cachar, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup, Kamrup-Metropolitan, Karimganj, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari and Sivasagar.

Over 1342 villages under 52 revenue circles are inundated, and floodwaters have submerged approximately 25,367.61 hectares of cropland.

The Brahmaputra River's water levels have surpassed the danger mark at Neamatighat, Tezpur and Dhubri.

Similarly, the Burhidihing River is above the danger level at Chenimari (Khowang), and the Disang River is overflowing at Nanglamuraghat.

More than 58,000 people are currently taking shelter in 172 relief camps and distribution centres across 13 districts of Assam.

The deluge has also affected 2,83,712 domestic animals.
