Absconding for seven months, alleged rapist surrenders before Manipur Police

Imphal: A 28-year-old youth who was on the run for the past seven months in connection with the kidnapping and rape case of a minor, has at last surrendered in front of Manipur police on Tuesday, officials said on Wednesday.

Identified as Khullakpam Jayed, 28, a resident of Naharup Pangong Makhong in Imphal East district, the young man surrendered to the police on Tuesday in connection with an FIR at Women Police Station, Imphal East.

He was charged with kidnapping a minor girl and sexually assaulting her on July 12, 2023.

According to police records, the father of the girl filed a complaint with the police on July 14, 2023.

The police managed to rescue the girl from an area in Imphal East district. However, the accused was at large.

Surprisingly, the accused surrendered before the police on Tuesday.

During interrogation in police custody he admitted the crime, the police said.

He was produced before the court and remanded his judicial custody till Thursday (February 8), the police added.
