Imphal: Manipur police have arrested over 370 individuals involved in extortion and criminal intimidation cases over the past year, said IGP (Intelligence) K Kabib.

The arrests, which include insurgents, highway looters, and extortionists, are part of the state's efforts to combat the rising tide of criminal activity in the region.

IGP (Intelligence) K Kabib said in Imphal on Saturday that 250 individuals, including insurgents from various underground outfits, anti-socials, and gang members, were apprehended from their hideouts.

Additionally, 121 individuals involved in illegal monetary demands, bomb threats, and extortion campaigns targeting organized sectors, private firms, educational institutions, and unorganized sectors were also arrested.

Kabib highlighted the significant impact of extortion on the state, with reports of highway robberies and extortion rackets becoming increasingly prevalent.

Crores of rupees have been illegally collected on national and state highways, creating a climate of fear and insecurity.

To address this pressing issue, the Manipur government, under the guidance of central authorities, has established an anti-extortion cell within the state home department.

Headed by the Director General of Manipur police, the cell comprises 15 police cracking teams, each assigned to a different district.

These teams, led by Inspector Generals of Police, will work tirelessly to dismantle extortion networks and bring perpetrators to justice.

Kabib appealed to the public to play a crucial role in combating crime by providing timely information to the authorities. By working together, the police and the community can effectively address the challenges of extortion and create a safer environment for all.
