29 cases related to Manipur violence handed over to CBI

IMPHAL: In her inaugural address during the budget session of the 12th Manipur legislative assembly on Wednesday (February 28), Manipur governor Anusuiya Uikey revealed that a total of 219 individuals from various communities lost their lives in the ongoing communal violence that erupted on May 3 last year.

Uikey announced that the government is prepared to provide ex-gratia compensation of Rs 10 lakhs to those affected by the violence in Manipur, subject to verification by the competent authorities.

In efforts to maintain peace and harmony in the strife-torn Northeast state of Manipur, the central government has deployed 119 companies of CRPF columns and 140 companies of the Army.

These central forces are strategically stationed to assist the state forces in maintaining order, the Manipur governor noted.

She further informed that a total of 1,87,143 individuals were detained under preventive measures, and after due legal processes, they were subsequently released.

Regarding the ethnic violence, approximately 10,000 First Information Reports (FIRs) were lodged at various police stations and outposts across Manipur.

Manipur governor Uikey also disclosed that 29 cases have been transferred to the CBI and one to the NIA for independent and transparent investigations.

Additionally, four FIRs are currently being processed for transfer to the CBI, while five others are slated for transfer to the NIA, the Manipur governor added.
