27 unexploded mortar bombs from 1971 war safely detonated in Tripura
AGARTALA: In a significant operation under the Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) initiative, the Tripura Police and the Spear Corps of the Indian Army successfully detonated 27 unexploded mortar bombs dating back to the 1971 India-Pakistan war.
The controlled explosions took place on August 20 at the 3 CRPF Battalion Firing Range.
The mortar bombs, remnants of the conflict, were discovered on July 18, 2024, during excavation work at the residence of Dulal Nama.
Initially, 12 bombs were unearthed by laborers digging a pond, and a subsequent search revealed an additional 15 mortar bombs.
Local authorities swiftly involved the Indian Army’s Counter Improvised Explosive Device (CIED) team.
Following a formal request from the Superintendent of Police (SP) of West Tripura, both military and civilian teams collaborated closely to address the situation.
The military, in coordination with the civil administration, established a secure perimeter around the site to ensure the operation's safety.
The bombs were safely neutralized and disposed of without incident.
